WHY OUTDOOR EXERCISE? (The geeky bit)?

Medical research has proven the strong mental health benefits of exercise again and again.

and current research suggests outdoor fitness could enhance these benefits even further.

At New Energy Fitness we believe the outdoor and training  really enriches our experience. We think fresh air makes you happy and complements the indoor gym sessions. For us, a month on, the simple satisfaction of a user-friendly resource is all the proof we need!

There is quantifiable research suggesting that outdoor exercise provides greater benefits than sweating indoors.

One Study’s Findings

The study was based on results of indoor and outdoor exercise trials. It was found that the wellbeing outcomes of both types of exercise showed an improvement.

The most noteworthy aspect of this study is seen when looking at which outdoor results were ‘better’ than indoor results.

On average, the following sensations were reportedly even stronger after outdoor exercise than they were after indoor exercise:

  • Revitalisation
  • Increased energy
  • Positive engagement
  • Enjoyment and satisfaction

Similarly, it seems outdoor exercise decreased the following sensations even further than indoor exercise did:

  • Tension
  • Confusion
  • Anger
  • Depression

We all know exercise is a huge factor in improving mental health, so why not try to maximise the benefits? Furthermore, the happier and more satisfied you feel immediately after exercise, the more likely you are to keep the activity up.

This is just the start and there’s much more out there!

‘Does Participating in Physical Activity in Outdoor Natural Environments Have a Greater Effect on Physical and Mental Wellbeing than Physical Activity Indoors? A Systematic Review.’

Environmental Science & Technology, 2013

Other studies have shown that physical activity outdoors lowers a person’s blood pressure and heart rate. As a result, exercise outdoors feels less strenuous than similar exercise indoors, which, in turn, pushes you closer to your maximum performance. Train outdoors, push yourself to the limit and keep breaking your personal record!

… and that’s just the start!
